Prep Time 30 minutes mins
Cook Time 8 hours hrs
1 Peeler
1 Knife or Mandolin Slicer
1 Teaspoon Measuring spoon
1 Tablespoon Measuring spoon
1 Cutting Board
1 Lemon Squeezer
- 4-6 Large Apples Firm
- 1-2 Tbsp Lemon Juice To prevent browning
- 1 tsp Cinnamon Ground
- ½ tsp Nutmeg Ground
- ¼ tsp Ginger Ground (Optional for warmth)
- 1-2 Tbsp Maple Syrup or Honey Optional for sweetness
- 1 pinch Salt Optional, but enhances flavour
Prepare
Wash and peel the apples (optional, depending on your preference). If you prefer to keep the skins on, wash thoroughly
Slice the apples thinly
Mix the cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger (if using), and a pinch of salt in a small bowl (Seasoning)
Toss
Place the apple slices in a large bowl
Sprinkle apple slices with lemon juice
Toss to coat the slices evenly (To prevent browning and to preserve the colour)
Dehydrate
Set the dehydrator to 60ºC and dehydrate for 6-8 hours, or until the apple slices are completely dry
Check the slices periodically, as dehydration time may vary depending on the thickness of your slices and the type of apple used
The apple should be completely dry and snap when bent, with no moisture remaining
Cool and Store
Once done, remove the apple chips from the dehydrator and let them cool completely on the trays
Store the cooled apple chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks
If you want to extend the shelf life, store them in a sealed container or a vacuum-sealed bag
Tips:
Uniform Slices: For best results, try to slice the apples uniformly to ensure even drying.
Sweetness Adjustments: Adjust the amount of honey or maple syrup depending on your sweetness preference.
Flavour Variations: You can add a dash of ground cloves or cardamom for an even spicier kick, or try a pinch of cayenne pepper for a touch of heat.
